Lauren Pell is one female in a very male dominated environment – but no complaints here, as her role is Senior Barber at one of the UK’s busiest and best traditional barber shop groups – The Dandy Gent.
Lauren started working as a barber apprentice in 2016, she served her apprenticeship directly under The Dandy Gent’s founder and owner of its three shops – Shane O’Shaughnessy, and has fast-tracked her career through sheer determination to succeed.
“I did every job before falling in love with barbering – from bar work to retail – since I started cutting hair, I’ve never looked back.”
Just 3 years from starting, and at the age of 32, Lauren is now one of The Dandy Gent’s most popular Senior Barbers, working in a team with a combined 100+ years’ experience.
“I love my work, and the team I work with,” said Lauren. “We have a lot of fun, but take our business very seriously.” She explained.
“It takes a certain character to hold my own, surrounded by these boys – but it’s all in good fun. I’m working with some very talented barbers here and there’s a lot of mutual respect that keeps the relationships healthy. “
For now, Lauren enjoys her work in one of the most successful barber shops in the UK – and that’s no idle boast.
“We are second-to-none in the East Midlands, certainly,” explains Shane. “And our consistently impressive reviews speak volumes about Lauren and the whole team. I’m very proud of them all.”
Although Lauren is one of just two female barbers in the unashamedly promoted ‘traditional’ barber shop brand, The Dandy Gent has two more ‘savvy women’ in its ranks.
Sherri O’Shaughnessy, Shane’s wife and co-founder of The Dandy Gent, who hand-makes every single item in a range of over 25 grooming products, sold through the company’s three shops, website and to trade customers worldwide – and Marketing Manager, Sarah Monsoon who has been instrumental in the growth of the brand over the last four years and now runs the latest Dandy Gent barbershop to open in Nottingham.
“Lauren, Sarah and Sherri are all shining stars at The Dandy Gent, I value every one of them very highly – but don’t tell them I said that.” Smiles Shane.
